A harrowing image has surfaced showing the aftermath of the car crash that tragically claimed the life of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in the early hours of Thursday, in the Spanish province of Zamora. Jota, 28, died at approximately 00:30 local time alongside his younger brother, André Filipe Silva, 26, also a professional footballer.

The fatal accident reportedly occurred after a tyre on the Lamborghini they were traveling in burst, causing the vehicle to veer off the road before catching fire. The two brothers died at the scene.

The tragedy comes less than two weeks after Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. The couple shared three children.

A photo now circulating online shows the charred remains of the vehicle on the roadside, with medical responders surrounding the wreckage.

Emergency services in the Castilla y León region confirmed the details of the crash in a statement:

“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A vehicle was reported to be involved in a crash and had caught fire.

“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Provincial Fire Brigade, and the Emergency Coordination Center (CCU). Medical teams, including a Medical Emergency Unit and staff from the Mombuey Health Center, were dispatched and confirmed the death of two individuals at the scene.”

According to Spanish outlet El País, the fire damage made immediate identification of the victims impossible. A Civil Guard spokesperson stated that preliminary evidence pointed to a tyre blowout as the cause. The official investigation remains ongoing, with a full report expected to be submitted to a duty court in Zamora.

“The investigation is being led by Civil Guard traffic officers,” the spokesperson said. “No other vehicle was involved, and no other injuries were reported. The full report may take four to five days or longer to complete. Details such as the car's speed at the time of the crash will be determined based on road evidence.”

Tributes have flooded in from across the football world in response to the devastating news.

Liverpool FC released an emotional statement:

“Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. We have been informed the 28-year-old passed away in a road traffic accident in Spain alongside his brother, André.

“At this time, the club will not be making any further comment and asks that the privacy of Diogo and André's family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our full support.”

Pedro Proença, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, also paid tribute:

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are heartbroken over the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Diogo was not only an incredible talent with nearly 50 caps for the national team, but a kind and joyful person respected by teammates and rivals alike.

“On behalf of the Federation, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel.

“We have requested a minute of silence before Portugal’s Women's European Championship match against Spain to honour their memory.

“Their loss is a tremendous blow to Portuguese football. We will do everything we can to uphold their legacy.”
