EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede reveals the commission probing 18 sitting governor

Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),  has issued a press statement  confirming that the commission is currently investigating 18 sitting governors.

This disclosed while speaking during a sensitization programme in Lagos on Friday, July 18.

Olukoyede, said the agency is will take the up an action when the governors leaves office

During the question and answer session, the EFCC boss narrated how a former governor was arrested in the United Kingdom because a hotel manager thought he was mad for spraying pounds.

Olukoyede, responded by saying

"Let me share an experience we had at the EFCC. There was a time we were investigating a sitting governor—we don’t wait for their tenure to end before launching investigations.

As I speak to you now, we are investigating about 18 serving governors. Once they leave office, we will take it to the next level.

This particular governor was under investigation while still in office. The day after he completed his tenure, he fled to the UK to evade arrest by the EFCC.

Coincidentally, it was his birthday that same week. He organized a party at the hotel where he was staying. During the celebration, he started spraying pound sterling notes—£50 and £10 bills.

The hotel manager, who had never seen anything like that before, was called to the scene. Shocked, he contacted emergency services by dialling 911.

When the Metropolitan Police arrived, the manager requested the arrest of the former governor. They even tried to put him in an ambulance.

It took the intervention of his friends, including two governors who had travelled to London for the celebration, to convince them that the former governor wasn’t mentally unstable—as the manager initially believed," he narrated.
