Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Diogo Jota and Brother AndrĂ© Silva

The fatal car accident that claimed the life of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota also took the life of his younger brother, AndrĂ© Filipe Teixeira da Silva — a professional footballer who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.

According to AFP, Spanish authorities confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, July 3, when a vehicle veered off the motorway in Cernadilla, located in the northwestern province of Zamora. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The news comes just weeks after 28-year-old Jota celebrated his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto.

AndrĂ© Silva, 25, was born in Gondomar, Portugal, on April 28, 2000. A versatile attacking midfielder, he also played as a winger or centre-forward. Standing at 1.68 meters tall, he had been with Penafiel since 2023 and held a market value of €450,000 as of June 2025—the highest of his career.

Silva's football journey began with Gondomar SC in 2008 before moving to FC Porto’s youth ranks. Over the years, he featured for clubs such as FamalicĂ£o U23, Boavista U23, and Gondomar before joining Penafiel. Though his career involved multiple free transfers, his dedication to the sport was clear throughout his steady progression in Portuguese football.

The devastating loss of both brothers—united by family and their shared love for the game—has sent shockwaves through the football community, with fans and clubs mourning their untimely passing.
