INEC disqualifies six additional political groups

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that eight political associations have successfully passed the initial stage of the political party registration process, while six others have been disqualified.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 30, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the commission reviewed the progress during its regular meeting on October 30, 2025. This followed an earlier update provided on September 11. He explained that fourteen associations were pre-qualified to begin the registration steps, which commenced with a briefing on September 17.

According to Olumekun, a designated portal for uploading required documents was available from September 18 to October 18. By Saturday, October 19, 2025, eight of the 14 pre-qualified associations had successfully submitted all necessary information and documents.

He stated that the next phase involves a comprehensive assessment and verification of the materials submitted to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and guidelines. “This stage will confirm whether each association meets the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022),” he said.

Reiterating INEC’s commitment to transparency and fairness, Olumekun added that the commission remains dedicated to fostering inclusivity and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic culture.

So far, INEC said it has received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking to become political parties, but only eight have successfully completed the first stage of the registration process.
