Defection: Gov Diri Explains Move to APC

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, says his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the best interest of the state.

Speaking on Sunday at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri publicly addressed his defection for the first time since announcing his resignation from the PDP on October 15.

He noted that although many may not immediately understand his choice, the reasons behind it would become clearer with time, insisting that his motives were driven by the state’s welfare.

The governor expressed joy over the presence of leaders from different political backgrounds at the Thanksgiving service, stressing that Bayelsa’s unity was vital for its progress.

Diri, who is serving his second term, reminded the audience that politics should promote development rather than division and pledged to continue working to foster unity and growth across the state.

He added that the state’s peace, security and ongoing development were sufficient reasons to be grateful to God, urging residents to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving.

“Someone had to make the decision, and I made it on behalf of the state,” he said. “Some may not understand now, but in time, the reasons will become clear. Since taking office, we focused on completing abandoned projects and initiating new ones. The peace and security we enjoy today are further reasons to thank God. Politics should build, not destroy. This gathering reflects the unity in our state.”
