Democrat Zohran Mamdani, 34, Wins New York City Mayoral Election

Democrat Zohran Mamdani has secured victory in the New York City mayoral race, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, according to projections from the Associated Press.

Mamdani, 34, a self-described democratic socialist, is set to become the city’s first Muslim mayor, its first mayor of South Asian descent, and the youngest person to hold the office in more than 100 years.

In his victory speech, Mamdani declared: “In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light.”

He continued: “Together, we will usher in a generation of change. If we embrace this bold new path—rather than running from it—we can confront oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength they fear, not the appeasement they seek.”
He then addressed former President Donald Trump directly, saying: “This is not only how we stop Trump; it’s how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”

The Ugandan-born politician emerged victorious over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent, as well as Republican Curtis Sliwa, AP reported.
