Manchester United have issued a three-year ban to a supporter after he made a homophobic comment about Chelsea on social media.
The Premier League club confirmed that the individual had violated its ground regulations, resulting in a suspension that prevents him from attending both home and away fixtures.
The fan allegedly used the term “rent boys” to describe Chelsea supporters — a phrase that has long been considered offensive and is classified as a hate crime by the Crown Prosecution Service.
He also claimed that match officials attempted to remove him from a recent game after he referred to United defender Diogo Dalot using a homophobic slur.
A screenshot shared by the fan showed a letter from the club stating: “It has recently come to our attention that you may have breached our official terms and conditions. Specifically, we understand that you have used homophobic written communication or online towards Chelsea and their supporters.”
The letter further noted: “This offence contravenes ground regulations and is an offence under the club’s official sanctions document. For a first offence, this carries a three-year suspension (home and away).”
Before their match against Chelsea at Old Trafford in September, United issued a public reminder condemning the “rent boys” chant, calling it “offensive, inappropriate, and unacceptable.” The club emphasized that both the CPS and the FA classify the chant as discriminatory and a hate crime.
A Manchester United spokesperson reiterated the club’s stance: “Manchester United has zero tolerance for discriminatory language or behaviour of any kind.”
