Senate accepts Tinubu’s request to sack 3 RECs Senate accepts Tinubu?s request to sack 3 RECs

The Senate has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to terminate the appointments of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Sokoto, Abia, and Adamawa states. The affected RECs—Nura Ali (Sokoto), Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), and Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa)—were initially suspended by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2023 over allegations of electoral malpractices during elections in their respective states.
During a plenary session, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) moved the motion for their dismissal, citing the president’s adherence to Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) supported the motion, emphasizing that the terminations would serve as a deterrent to public officials engaging in misconduct. Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) noted that with 91 senators present, the Senate had achieved the two-thirds majority required to endorse the request.
The motion was adopted through a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The decision aims to reinforce the integrity of public offices and uphold constitutional principles.
