Chioma Ajunwa Blames Poor Leadership for Athlete Exodus, Says Nigerian Sports Federation Needs Major Overhaul

Nigeria's first Olympic gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa-Oparah has blamed inadequate leadership for the mass departure of Nigerian athletes.

This follows reports that top sprinter Favour Ofili switched his nationality from Nigeria to Turkey.

In response to the news, Ajunwa underlined that the main cause of athletes' frequent departures is a lack of effective leadership in the sports industry.

“The Nigerian sports federation needs a lot of work,” Ajunwa posted on her official X account.

“Losing Nigerian citizens to other countries like Turkey is a sign of bad leadership. From athletics to football and other sports, we have amazing talents who end up winning medals, flying the flags of other countries.”
