The bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, have arrived at a church in Portugal ahead of their funeral services.
Mourners are expected to gather early this morning in Gondomar for a wake honoring the lives of the two brothers, who tragically died in a fiery car crash on Thursday, July 3.
Local parish priest José Manuel Macedo confirmed that the wake would begin at 8 a.m. at Capela de Ressurreição, followed by a funeral Mass on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the adjoining Igreja Matriz Catholic Church.
“We are here to commemorate their lives with everyone and to share both the sorrow and the Christian hope,” Macedo told CNN.
According to reports, the accident occurred when a tire on Jota's Lamborghini Huracán burst while he was overtaking another vehicle on the A-52 near Cernadilla, just ten miles from the Portuguese border. The car veered off the road, rolled over, and caught fire, sparking a blaze in the surrounding vegetation.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene around 12:35 a.m., but both brothers were pronounced dead upon arrival. Spanish government official Ángel Blanco confirmed that they died instantly.
Jota, 28, and André, 26, were reportedly en route to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, following medical advice for Jota to avoid flying after undergoing lung surgery.
The wake is being held just 30 minutes from Jota’s hometown of Porto, where he had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso in a ceremony filled with friends and family only two weeks prior.
