Former Adamawa APC governorship candidate, Binani, defects to ADC

Providing more details on Sunday afternoon, Maulud explained that the defection was conducted quietly, with no media presence or formal announcement.

He noted, however, that Binani—who served as the senator representing Adamawa Central when she contested the 2023 governorship election—will soon return to Yola for a more public and elaborate introduction to her new party.

Binani narrowly lost the 2023 governorship race to incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Binani’s departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not unexpected, as she had been experiencing friction with the party’s leadership.

The APC leadership in Adamawa has been seen by many as showing undue loyalty to the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who, by virtue of his federal position, is considered the de facto leader of the APC in the state.

Reports suggest Binani was uncomfortable with this dynamic, especially given the political rivalry between her and Ribadu. Ribadu was among the five aspirants who lost the APC governorship ticket to Binani in 2023, and he is believed to still harbor ambitions of either contesting again or backing a preferred candidate in 2027.
