“I am still a member of the Labour Party. The ADC coalition is a strategic move ahead of the 2027 elections.” – Peter Obi
The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party, clarifying that his involvement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition does not signal a defection.
Speaking at a rally to kick off the Labour Party's governorship campaign in Anambra State, Obi addressed the growing speculation about his political affiliations. He explained that while he is part of an opposition coalition that has adopted the ADC as a platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, he remains a committed member of the Labour Party.
“I want to begin by clearing up some confusion that has been circulating. People have been asking, ‘Is Obi now in the ADC or still in the Labour Party?’ Let me state it clearly: I and the National Assembly members of the Labour Party are involved in a broader coalition that has chosen the ADC as a strategic platform for the 2027 elections. Other parties will also be joining us in this effort.
But as of today, we are still members of the Labour Party. If anyone asks you where Peter Obi stands politically, tell them Peter Obi is in the Labour Party. If they ask about the coalition, tell them it is for the 2027 elections,” he said.
Obi also announced his intention to run for president again, stating that he remains the most competent candidate for the job.
“Anyone has the right to contest the presidency—I’m not stopping anyone. But if you’re asked, let them know I am in the race, and no one does it better than I do,” he asserted.
He further endorsed the Labour Party's governorship candidate in Anambra State, Dr. George Moghalu, describing him as a capable and focused leader.
“Our candidate is calm, goal-oriented, and accomplished. He’s a highly marketable candidate, and I believe that with him as our standard-bearer, Anambra will experience good governance and people-centered leadership,” Obi said.
