Man Dies by killing himself at Whitney Museum in Manhattan

A 34-year-old man tragically lost his life on Wednesday afternoon, July 30, after falling from an upper level of the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, New York.

Authorities from the NYPD reported that the man was discovered on Gansevoort Street outside the Chelsea-based museum shortly before 5:30 p.m., with injuries consistent with a fall from a height. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sources say the man, whose identity has not been publicly released, was visiting the museum and is believed to have died by suicide.

In a statement, a Whitney Museum spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the incident:

“We are devastated that a visitor lost their life. Our thoughts are with their family and friends, as well as with our staff, visitors, and neighbors who were present at the time.”

The museum added that it is working closely with authorities and will provide any necessary support as the investigation continues. It also announced a delayed opening at 12 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, out of respect for the incident and those affected.
