The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to use their U.S. visas strictly for the purposes declared during their application process.
This warning follows concerns raised by the United States Government over the growing trend of visa misuse among some Nigerian nationals.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized the importance of complying with the terms and conditions attached to U.S. visas.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to alert the public to the concerns expressed by the U.S. Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerian citizens,” the statement read. “All visa holders are strongly advised to adhere strictly to the purpose stated in their visa applications.”
Akinlabi noted that U.S. authorities continue to conduct extensive security checks even after initial entry, warning that any violation of immigration laws—including overstaying or working illegally—could lead to visa revocation, deportation, and permanent ineligibility for future travel to the U.S.
He further urged Nigerian students studying in the U.S. to maintain active enrollment in their academic programs and avoid unauthorized withdrawals or prolonged absenteeism, which could result in cancellation of their visas and affect their future travel eligibility.
The statement also highlighted that U.S. consular officers have the discretion to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to give birth in the U.S. solely to secure citizenship for their children.
“The NIS will continue to work closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria remains in good standing and avoids being subject to expanded visa restrictions,” Akinlabi added.
The Service called on all Nigerian citizens to respect U.S. visa regulations, stressing that responsible conduct is crucial to preserving lawful travel opportunities.
