Reaction as Nigeria crashes out of FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have been eliminated from the ongoing FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Czechia after a 77–51 loss to Hungary on Wednesday night, July 16.

Despite a promising start that ended the first quarter in a 9–9 tie, the Nigerian girls struggled to keep up with their European opponents. Hungary dominated the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 30–12, which shifted the momentum firmly in their favour.

Nigeria attempted a comeback in the third quarter, managing 15 points against Hungary’s 16, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Hungary maintained their lead in the fourth quarter, edging it 16–15 to seal their victory.

Hungary’s Kinga Jisepovits was the standout performer, leading her team with 19 points, while Eliza Farbas grabbed 13 rebounds. For Nigeria, Tobenna Nweke scored 12 points, and Francis Chukwu contributed 9 rebounds.

Though Nigeria exits the tournament, they made history by becoming the first African team to win a match and advance to the round of 16 in the history of the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.
