Malcolm-Jamal Warner, widely recognized for his role as Theo Huxtable on the hit sitcom The Cosby Show, has reportedly passed away at the age of 54.

TMZ reports that the actor died while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. According to local authorities, Warner drowned while swimming at Cocles Beach in Limon after being caught in a strong current. His body was discovered on the afternoon of Sunday, July 20. Officials confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxia.

Warner gained fame portraying the Huxtables’ only son on the long-running NBC series, which aired from 1984 to 1992. He was just 14 years old when he was chosen by Bill Cosby for the role, having auditioned on the final day of the casting process.

Throughout his career, Warner often reflected on the legacy of The Cosby Show, particularly in light of controversies surrounding its star. In a 2021 interview, he acknowledged the mixed reactions to the show’s legacy but emphasized its positive impact on many families and young viewers.

Born in August 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner was named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. He began acting in childhood and attended The Professional Children’s School in New York.

In 1986, Warner received an Emmy nomination and also hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live that same year.
