"Tinubu did not suspend five-year US visas for Americans, says Presidency."
The Nigerian Presidency has vehemently denied social media reports claiming President Bola Tinubu halted the issuance of 5-year multiple-entry visas to US citizens. This denial follows the US announcement on July 8th of stricter visa regulations for Nigerians, limiting most non-immigrant visas to single entry with a three-month validity.
Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga stated that Nigeria maintains its existing visa policy for US citizens and remains committed to bilateral agreements and reciprocity. He emphasized that President Tinubu directed government agencies to uphold all existing bilateral agreements, ensuring fair treatment of foreign nationals.
The statement clarified that the 90-day single-entry visa applies only to the new e-visa system, designed to streamline the process for tourists and business travelers. This system replaces the previous visa-on-arrival system, which was deemed inefficient and prone to extortion. The e-visa system is intended to boost investment, trade, and tourism while aligning with global best practices.
Nigeria's government asserts that its continued issuance of 5-year multiple-entry visas to US citizens is not reciprocated by the US government, which has only introduced the new 90-day visa for Nigerians. The Nigerian government expressed its intent to continue engaging with US authorities to address the visa policy changes and restore a more balanced and mutually respectful relationship.
