Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly “seriously considering” granting a pardon to Sean “Diddy” Combs as the music mogul awaits sentencing at a Brooklyn jail.
According to Deadline, as the judge prepares to sentence Combs on prostitution-related charges—after he was acquitted of three more serious allegations—Trump has been weighing the possibility of issuing a pardon.
Sources told the outlet that the pardon idea has progressed from mere speculation to a concrete possibility.
Combs, 55, was recently found not guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering but was convicted on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 3 and could face up to 10 years in prison.
Talk of a presidential pardon has circulated since the start of Combs’ trial, with Trump hinting at openness to the idea back in May.
When asked about it in the Oval Office, Trump said, “Nobody’s asked, but I know people are thinking about it.”
He added, “I know they’re thinking about it. I think some people have been very close to asking.”
Trump further commented, “First of all, I’d look at what’s happening. And I haven’t been watching it too closely, although it’s certainly getting a lot of coverage.”
“I haven’t seen him, I haven’t spoken to him in years. He used to really like me a lot, but I think when I ran for politics, that relationship kind of broke down, from what I read. I don’t know. He didn’t tell me that, but I saw some nasty statements in the paper all of a sudden.”
Concluding, Trump said, “I don’t know. I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or not, it wouldn’t have any impact.”
Attorney John Koufos, who recently met with Trump’s pardon coordinator Alice Marie Johnson and pardon attorney Ed Martin, told the Daily Mail that parts of Combs’ case align with Trump’s stance against “overcriminalization” and the “weaponization” of charges.
