Woman Dies After Falling Into 170-Foot Well at Lagos Construction Site

A woman has tragically lost her life after falling into a 170-foot-deep well at a construction site in the Ijegun area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, close to Fadeko International Hotel. According to a statement released on Friday, July 11, 2025, by Maria Fadairo, the Senior Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the accident was first reported at 7:34 p.m. on Monday, June 30.

Responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station arrived to discover that the victim had fallen into an open well located in front of a one-storey building under construction. The building reportedly features six two-bedroom flats on a fenced plot measuring 648 square metres.

Due to the complexity of the rescue, a multi-agency response was activated. After several days of coordinated efforts, the woman’s body was successfully recovered on Thursday, July 10.

The operation was led by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with the Nigerian Police, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and other emergency agencies.

“The victim was recovered deceased and handed over to SEHMU officials, while LASAMBUS remained on standby and the Nigeria Police monitored the operation,” the statement read.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, extended her condolences to the victim’s family and praised the joint effort of all involved agencies.

“We express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased and commend all the teams that participated in the recovery,” she said.

Adeseye also underscored the critical need for safety at construction sites, warning that leaving a 170-foot well uncovered poses a serious risk to public safety.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation.
