The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, has approved a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal tertiary educational institutions across Nigeria.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the ban applies to all categories of tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Alausa explained that the move is aimed at addressing the deterioration of infrastructure and manpower caused by the proliferation of institutions. He noted that Nigeria already has a sufficient number of tertiary schools, but many struggle with inadequate facilities and staffing.
“If we do not act decisively, it will lead to marked declines in educational quality and undermine the international respect that Nigerian graduates command,” he warned.
The minister stressed that the government’s focus will now be on revitalising and adequately funding existing institutions to improve quality and global competitiveness.
