Federal pensioners on Monday staged a protest at the Lagos office of the Pension Transitional Arrangements Directorate (PTAD), demanding the immediate payment of a ₦32,000 pension raise approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Led by Mukaila Ogunbote, Chairman of the Coalition of Federal Pensioners, Lagos Chapter, the retirees carried placards with messages such as “PTAD is all about you, stop selection” and “No ₦32,000 increment.”
Ogunbote lamented that the delay in implementing the increase had left many retirees struggling to survive, accusing the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, of stalling the process. “The minister should give us our money,” he declared.
President Tinubu had last year approved the increment, along with “long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee” for vulnerable retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The directive was reaffirmed last Wednesday after a briefing from PenCom Director General, Omolola Oloworaran.
PTAD Liaison Officer, Cashmir Audu, addressed the protesters, confirming that the ₦32,000 raise was approved but not yet funded. “It is the civil right of pensioners to protest anytime. Unfortunately, we don’t have the funds yet,” he said.
