Ibom Air has denied any involvement in the release of a viral video showing a passenger in a state of indecent exposure during a recent flight.
Aniekan Essienette, the airline’s Group Manager for Marketing and Communications, spoke to TVC News on Monday, clarifying that while the incident happened on one of their aircraft, the video was not shared by any Ibom Air staff.
The Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, had ordered sanctions against any employee found responsible for leaking the footage. He emphasized that while recording the incident for evidence was acceptable, making the footage public—especially containing indecent exposure—was “totally unacceptable.”
Essienette explained that multiple people around the area were not Ibom Air employees, meaning the video could have been recorded and leaked by others.
“As much as the video was taken on board, there were several other people who were not Ibom Air employees nearby. So anyone could have taken that video,” she said.
“I can categorically state that the video was not released by us. It is unfortunate it has gone viral. We do not condone such indecent exposure, so we would not have been the ones to release it.”
She added that the passenger had been forcibly removed after refusing to comply with instructions to disembark.
“She attempted to leave earlier but was restrained due to prior disturbances, leading the pilot to call security,” Essienette said. “Our crew had to restrain her briefly to ensure security could escort her off the plane, which unfortunately led to the incident captured on video.”
Addressing the growing cases of disruptive behavior on flights, Essienette stressed that no airline would deliberately humiliate passengers and urged authorities to focus on preventing similar occurrences going forward.
