Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says President Bola Tinubu should be acknowledged for stabilising Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala commended the president and his team for steering reforms in the right direction.
“The president and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy. You cannot really improve an economy unless it’s stable,” she said. “Tinubu has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy.”
The WTO chief stressed that while stability has been achieved, the focus must now shift to driving growth and cushioning the impact of reforms on citizens.
“What is needed next is growth,” she added. “We need to build social safety nets so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can get support. This will help them weather the hardship while we work on creating more jobs and putting more money in people’s pockets.”
Okonjo-Iweala noted that these priorities had been discussed with the president but did not disclose further details.
