19-year-old University Student Takes Her Own Life After Alleged Rape by Schoolmate

A 19-year-old student of Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, Sesethu Enhle Mboza, has died by suicide after allegedly being r@ped by a fellow student.

According to the advocacy group Women For Change, Mboza took her life on 29 October 2025.

The group stated on Sunday:
“After allegedly being r@ped in October, Sesethu reported the incident to the police. The suspect was arrested but later granted bail.”

They further criticised the university for failing to protect Mboza, noting that the accused student was allowed to remain on campus.

“Sesethu experienced severe trauma and panic attacks, frequently encountering her alleged perpetrator in the same environment where she should have felt safe,” the group said.

Women For Change expressed shock that a student facing such a serious allegation was permitted back on campus.

“This is not just a lack of compassion—it is a complete disregard for the safety and mental well-being of survivors. Universities are required to have Gender-Based Violence policies to protect students. No survivor should be forced to relive their trauma by seeing their alleged attacker,” the statement read.

The organisation called on Nelson Mandela University and all tertiary institutions to take responsibility and urgently strengthen their response mechanisms to gender-based violence.

“No survivor should ever feel unsafe, unsupported, or unheard within a learning institution. Sesethu’s life mattered. She deserves justice,” the group concluded.
