The Bayelsa State Police Command has declared 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Anyanwu Levi Chimezie, missing.
Anyanwu, who has the NYSC registration number BYS/25A/0244, was last seen on October 8, 2025. He is serving at the Ijaw National Academy in Kaiama, headquarters of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. Initially thought to be with fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses members, Mr. and Mrs. Wisdom George, the couple confirmed he visited them but left shortly after.
Police spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, said in a statement on Sunday, November 2, that the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
“On 10/10/25, Mr. Oke Emmanuel, a corps member and the missing man's roommate, was invited for questioning. He confirmed that the subject was last with the George family until 06/10/25,” the statement said.
Mr. George further told detectives that the corps member had complained of feeling unwell and was taken to Kaiama Referral Hospital on October 4. He was reportedly discharged the following day. However, on October 6, he disappeared to an unknown destination.
Police are also probing an alleged extortion scheme in which two inmates at the Igbara Correctional Centre, Abeokuta, posed as kidnappers and collected N100,000 from the victim’s parents. Detectives traced a phone call from 0906193291 to an inmate involved in another kidnapping case. The suspect claimed they saw the victim’s details online and exploited the situation. The money was paid into an Opay account belonging to one Atinuke Oluwalose, believed to be an associate of the inmate.
According to investigators, disturbing personal revelations made by the missing corps member regarding “recent social preferences and appetites” may have influenced his actions, though details remain confidential. Police stressed that there is no evidence of kidnapping in this case.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to establish a clear conclusion and ensure closure for the family.
