U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has directed the Department of Defense to prepare for potential military intervention in Nigeria if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Trump made the statement on his Truth Social account.
This development follows his decision on Friday to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged Christian genocide.
In a new statement, the U.S. government said it would immediately suspend all aid and assistance to Nigeria.
Trump further stated that the United States may be forced to enter what he described as a “now disgraced country,” prepared to confront and eliminate Islamic terrorists responsible for the alleged atrocities.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! > WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
The announcement has triggered widespread reactions among Nigerians after the CPC designation.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian government have, in separate statements, rejected Trump’s classification.
