Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr says Nigeria has the stronger squad needed to overcome Gabon in the 2026 World Cup African playoff semi-final, set for November 13 in Rabat, Morocco.
Rohr, who has managed both nations and now leads Benin Republic, stressed that Nigeria’s individual quality must be matched with a united team effort. He warned the Super Eagles not to underestimate Gabon, noting that the team still includes several experienced players he previously coached.
“Gabon and Nigeria are both strong sides,” Rohr said, recalling his time with the Gabonese team between 2010 and 2012, when they reached the 2012 AFCON quarter-finals.
He pointed out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and long-serving captain Bruno Ecuele Manga as major threats but maintained confidence in Nigeria’s superior talent. “If Nigeria plays collectively as they did against Benin, they can defeat Gabon,” he said.
Speaking on the other semi-final between Cameroon and DR Congo, Rohr predicted a tightly contested match, hinting that DR Congo may have the edge due to stronger individual players. He added that Cameroon could be affected by “administrative issues,” suggesting a potential final of Nigeria vs. DR Congo.
