PDP: I’m Here to Mend Divisions – Factional Acting Chairman Mohammed

Factional Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed, says his mission is to mend what he describes as the party’s “wounds” and restore unity amid its escalating leadership crisis.

Speaking on Monday after assuming office at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, Mohammed said his focus is to reposition the party, strengthen internal discipline and rebuild its structure.

“We all know the unfortunate condition of our once-glorious party, brought about by the actions and inactions of our leaders and members,” he said.

“From ruling the country for 16 straight years, we have spent over a decade in opposition. We have gone from being a strong opposition force to a weakened one due to inexplicable defections by governors, lawmakers, council chairmen and others.”

He said he accepted the role of acting national chairman at this challenging moment “through God’s mercy and the support of key stakeholders.”

“My duty is clear: heal the party’s wounds, end factional division, reposition the PDP, and restore respect for the rule of law,” he added.

Mohammed pledged to organise an inclusive national convention and hand over to a duly elected National Working Committee after completing pending congresses at all levels.

“We must return this party to its true owners — the Nigerian people. A new dawn is here, and with it the rebirth of the PDP,” he said, urging members to support him with prayers and genuine commitment.

He also disclosed that consultations with major party stakeholders were ongoing and that a National Executive Committee meeting would soon be convened to address lingering internal challenges.

His resumption followed a tense weekend in which the Umar Damagum–led faction suspended several senior officials — including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade — over alleged anti-party activities.
