Pope and Palestinian president meet to discuss two-state solution (video)

Pope Leo XIV hosted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Vatican on Thursday, November 6, for high-level discussions centered on the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

According to the Holy See, the talks were “cordial” and produced a key point of consensus: both leaders agreed that a lasting resolution to the regional conflict must be based on a two-state solution.

The meeting was the first in-person encounter between the 70-year-old Pope Leo and the 89-year-old President Abbas.

In addition to long-term peace efforts, the discussion also addressed the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Both leaders underscored the urgent need to deliver humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the conflict.

A video shared by EWTN Vatican captured part of the visit, highlighting the renewed diplomatic push for stability in the Holy Land.

This audience follows Abbas’s previous meeting with Pope Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, in December 2024.

President Abbas has led the Palestinian Authority since his 2005 election. While the Authority governs sections of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, it has not controlled the Gaza Strip since Hamas took over the territory in 2007.
