Popular live-band leader, Akiin Shuga, dies at 50

Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band maestro, Akinloye Tofowomo—widely known as Akiin Shuga—has passed away.

According to a statement issued by his family on November 3, he died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50 years old.

The family’s statement read:

“He was a guardian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance. For over three decades—both on stage and through mentorship—he redefined what it meant to lead a band with elegance, mastery, and purpose. To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution: truly a king in his craft.

As we grapple with this profound loss, we respectfully request privacy and a period of quiet reflection during this difficult time. We ask for the space to find closure and honour his life among loved ones and cherished memories.”

The family noted that details regarding memorial events and arrangements would be announced later.

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s life was characterized by resilience, passion, and purpose. After contracting polio at age five, he overcame immense challenges to become one of Nigeria’s foremost live-band performers and music entrepreneurs. His journey reflected the resurgence of live music as an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural identity.

In 1998, he founded the iconic Shuga Band, which has captivated audiences far and wide.

May his soul rest in peace.
