Seven Trapped After South Korea Power Plant Structure Collapses

At least seven people were trapped on Thursday, November 6, following the collapse of a major structure at a power plant on South Korea’s east coast, the National Fire Agency reported.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. (0500 GMT) at Korea East-West Power’s Ulsan Power facility in the southeastern city of Ulsan. Authorities said a large section of the plant, including a 60-metre-high boiler tower, collapsed while demolition preparations were underway.

The National Fire Agency confirmed that two individuals had been rescued, while at least seven others remained missing and are believed to be trapped under the debris. Emergency teams are continuing search and rescue operations at the site.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok directed all government ministries to “mobilise all available personnel and equipment, giving top priority to rescuing those trapped.” Nearby residents were also being evacuated as a precaution, his office said.

Local reports noted that the collapse happened during the dismantling of the thermal power plant, which had already been decommissioned.
