If I ever leave PDP, I’ll join APC because of Buhari, Tinubu — Sowunmi

Segun Sowunmi, a key ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has revealed that if he ever leaves the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his next destination would be the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Your View, Sowunmi explained that his admiration for President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari stems from their political consistency and stability.

“I’ve always said it: if I ever leave the PDP, I’m going to the APC,” Sowunmi stated. “Why? Because at least I can accept that the two main pillars of the APC—President Buhari and President Tinubu—are stable people. They don’t jump from one political tendency to the other and have remained steady since 1998.”

Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign, criticized the PDP’s leadership, suggesting their internal divisions and lack of direction could push him to leave the party.

“If PDP leaders insist on destroying the party, I will consider my options. But before joining the APC, I would consult with my friend Felix Morka [APC National Publicity Secretary], study the party’s constitution, and make an informed decision,” he said.

He also voiced strong opposition to the coalition movement championed by Atiku, saying it contributes to the instability within the PDP.

“One of the reasons I’m irritated by this talk of coalition is that I don’t see how responsible political actors can keep hopping from one platform to another. I don’t agree with it. If I must leave PDP, I want to go somewhere with long-term stability,” he said.

Sowunmi, once a vocal critic of Tinubu, appears to have softened his stance since meeting the President. In a recent Channels TV interview, he said the meeting helped him better understand Tinubu’s policies and vision.

He also claimed a long history with the President, saying, “I’ve known Tinubu since 1994 and I can work with him.”

In a parting comment, Sowunmi described Tinubu as “smarter than all his political rivals,” including Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
