Linda Yaccarino Resigns as CEO of Elon Musk's X After Two Years
Linda Yaccarino, Chief Executive Officer of X—the social media platform owned by Elon Musk—has announced her resignation, effective Wednesday, July 9, after serving two years in the role.
While Yaccarino did not disclose a specific reason for stepping down, she referenced the company's transition into “a new chapter” following its recent acquisition by Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI.
In a post shared on the platform, Yaccarino expressed gratitude to Musk for the opportunity.
“When [Musk] and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to help realize the extraordinary mission of this company,” she wrote. “I'm deeply grateful for his trust in me—to safeguard free speech, help steer the company’s turnaround, and shape X into the Everything App.”
Elon Musk, who also leads Tesla and SpaceX, appointed Yaccarino as CEO in May 2023, just months after acquiring the platform (formerly Twitter) in a $44 billion deal. She officially assumed the role in June 2023, succeeding Musk, who had been acting CEO since the acquisition in October 2022.
Yaccarino, previously a top advertising executive at NBCUniversal, was brought in to help stabilize the company’s relationship with advertisers and guide its business operations, while Musk shifted his focus to product innovation.
Under her leadership, X rolled out several initiatives, including Community Notes, a user-driven fact-checking system, and unveiled plans for X Money, a financial services feature aligned with Musk’s long-term goal of transforming X into an all-in-one digital platform.
