5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Spain

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck a popular tourist destination in Spain early this morning, with tremors felt along the country’s southeastern coast.

According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, the quake occurred at 7:13 a.m. at a shallow depth of just two kilometers.

The Daily Mail reported that the tremors were experienced in over 50 towns, including the well-known holiday spot Alicante. The epicentre was located a few kilometers off the Spanish mainland and about 70 kilometers from Almeria.

As per Spanish outlet Sur, emergency alerts were sent to residents' phones, warning them of the seismic activity.

Both tourists and locals described the quake as “strong” and “surprisingly long,” with many being jolted awake by the shaking.

A social media user in Roquetas de Mar commented, “It was very noticeable and lasted several seconds—the whole hotel room was shaking.” Another resident in Almeria added, “The whole house shook.”

Tremors were also felt in the regions of Malaga, Granada, and Jaen, as well as across the Levante area, which includes Murcia, Alicante, and Albacete.
