A middle-aged man identified as Joseph Ayuba tragically slumped and died while attempting to break up a fight between a couple in the Dogon-Ruwa community of Abaji Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Barnabas Yakubu, a resident of the community, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. He explained that the couple, who lived next to the deceased, had gotten into a physical altercation following a disagreement. Ayuba, hearing the commotion, rushed out of his room to intervene.
According to Yakubu, Ayuba had just returned from his farm around 5:23 p.m. and was about to take a bath when he heard the man physically assaulting his wife. Dropping his sponge and bucket, Ayuba ran to stop the fight but collapsed in the process.
Although believed to be in good health before the incident, Ayuba was rushed to a clinic in Gawu town, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Upon receiving news of the tragedy, the community chief directed local vigilantes to arrest the couple involved. They were later handed over to security personnel in Gawu for further investigation.
A local vigilante named Ibrahim confirmed the development, saying, “We were told it was a minor misunderstanding that escalated into a fight between the man and his wife.”
The remains of the deceased have since been transported to his hometown of Paiko in Niger State for burial.
Police at the Gawu Division confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
