Akure S3x Workers Mourn Colleague K!lled Over N15,000 Refund, Call for Protection
S3x workers in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, are grieving the loss of a colleague who tragically died following a dispute with a male client over a N15,000 refund. The incident, which occurred in a brothel located in the Cathedral area of the city, has sparked calls for improved safety measures and health insurance for workers in the industry.
According to reports, the victim had agreed to an overnight engagement with a client who later became violent after claiming his expectations were not met. Eyewitnesses said the man initially paid N15,000 but turned aggressive the following morning when he expressed dissatisfaction with the service.
A close friend of the deceased, who works at a different brothel and spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the victim had been feeling unwell that night but still agreed to meet the client.
“She wasn’t feeling well, but she needed the money and took the job. After their session, he got angry and started fighting her. Others intervened and begged him to calm down,” the friend recounted.
Later, the man returned demanding a refund. By then, the woman had become very weak, and no one could access her phone to facilitate a refund due to her locked screen.
“We told him to come back later when she regained strength. But he returned again, and we had to involve the police,” she said. “If she had health insurance, maybe she could have gotten medical help sooner.”
Another colleague called on the government to put in place systems that would protect them from violent clients and provide support for their well-being.
“This job is physically and emotionally draining,” she said. “There should be rules and channels to report abusive customers before things spiral out of control.”
She also suggested that proper regulations could have prevented the incident, noting that only used condoms were found in the room, contrary to the man’s claims.
Patricia Uwonkolo, another s3x worker, highlighted the daily risks they face, including the need to self-medicate to cope with the demands of their work.
“We have no other option but to protect ourselves. We’ve formed a support system and even partnered with NGOs that help provide medication,” she said. “Sometimes we resort to herbs or other substances just to keep going. There’s stigma and pressure to satisfy customers, and it takes a toll.”
The brothel owner declined to comment when approached, directing inquiries to the police instead.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, confirmed that an investigation is underway. He stated that the client allegedly returned with a group of men to forcefully retrieve the N15,000. Police have since arrested the suspect and three accomplices, while others involved are still being sought.
The incident has reignited concerns over the vulnerability of s3x workers and the urgent need for systems that guarantee their safety and access to healthcare.
