Former Nigerian international and ex-Super Eagles winger, Okwuchukwu Waobikeze, has sadly passed away.

His death was confirmed on Monday, July 14, by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, in a statement shared on Facebook.

According to the announcement, Waobikeze passed away peacefully at around 7:34 p.m. Central Standard Time.

The statement read:
“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing into eternal glory of my brother, Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 p.m. CST.
We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
Please keep our family in your prayers at this time as we prepare to bid farewell to our beloved brother. God bless you all.”

Fondly known as ‘Babaoo’ by fans, Waobikeze was celebrated for his flair on the left wing and his powerful left foot.

He made significant contributions to Nigeria’s domestic football scene, playing for clubs such as Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).

Waobikeze’s passing comes shortly after the death of another former Super Eagles star, Peter Rufai, who captained the national team and was the first-choice goalkeeper during the 1990s.
