The Katsina State High Court has sentenced two men to death for the 2021 murder of Rabe Nasir, a former Commissioner for Science and Technology in the state.
Presiding over the case at High Court 9, Justice Ibrahim Mashi found Shamsu Lawal, a former security guard, and Tasi’u Rabi’u, the cook of the late commissioner, guilty of poisoning him to death. The court heard that both men conspired to kill Nasir after their attempts to steal from him failed.
A joint autopsy by the police and hospital confirmed the presence of poison in the victim’s system.
Additionally, the court sentenced another former guard, Sani Sa’adu, to five years in prison for withholding information about the crime.
However, a fourth defendant, Gift Bako, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence connecting her to the murder.
The defence counsel, Ahmad Murtala Kankia, pleaded for mercy on behalf of the convicts, citing their family responsibilities.
Rabe Nasir served as Commissioner under former Governor Aminu Masari and was previously a member of the House of Representatives for Mani and Bindawa local government areas in 2003.
