No Cause for Alarm – Minister Bianca Ojukwu Visits Ghana Over 'Nigerians Must Go' Protests

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has paid a diplomatic visit to Ghana following recent protests by some Ghanaian citizens demanding the deportation of Nigerians from the country.

Over the weekend, a group of local traders in Ghana staged a demonstration, claiming that certain Nigerians were involved in activities they described as "incompatible with Ghanaian values." Protesters carried placards and accused some Nigerians—particularly those in the retail trade sector—of engaging in criminal behavior and causing disruptions in the market space.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Wednesday, July 30, Ojukwu said viral videos from the protests had sparked concerns among Nigerians, prompting her visit for an on-ground assessment.

“Since I arrived, I haven’t seen people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards everywhere calling for Nigerians to be deported,” she said.

“This shows that the Ghanaian government and the president have stepped up to manage the situation. There is no cause for alarm. They are handling the matter effectively, and we will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders.”

Minister Ablakwa also assured that the Ghanaian government is actively addressing the issue and has already held discussions with representatives of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

“The Ghanaian government remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of everyone within our borders, both citizens and non-citizens,” he stated.

The visit by Minister Ojukwu is part of Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and strengthen bilateral ties amid public unrest.
