Peru Clinic Penalized $190,000 for Disclosing Shakira’s Medical Information
A private clinic in Peru has been fined nearly $190,000 for leaking the confidential medical records of Colombian music icon Shakira, who was briefly hospitalized in February for an abdominal condition.
The 48-year-old singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy winner was rushed to the Delgado Auna Clinic in Lima earlier this year with an undisclosed abdominal issue. Just two days later, she returned to perform on stage in the Peruvian capital.
However, shortly after her hospitalization, details from her medical report surfaced on social media, prompting public outrage and triggering an official investigation into the breach.
At the time, Delgado Auna Clinic acknowledged the incident and announced an internal probe, calling the leak a "serious ethical breach" of its code of conduct and data privacy protocols.
On Wednesday, Susalud—the government body responsible for overseeing Peru’s healthcare sector—announced a fine of 668,750 soles (approximately $188,355) against the clinic. The Delgado Clinic, part of the Auna health network, is known for serving high-profile patients and is located in the affluent Miraflores district, complete with a private helipad.
Susalud described the leak as a “serious violation,” stressing that all patients, regardless of their public status, are entitled to dignity, privacy, and the assurance that their personal medical data will be handled with strict confidentiality.
