“Quit depending solely on certificates; focus on acquiring future-ready skills,” advises Gov Otu to Nigerian youth

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has urged Nigerian youths to pivot from conventional academic paths toward emerging sectors such as space technology, highlighting it as a promising avenue for economic growth.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan-Enoh, at the conclusion of a five-day intensive training program for 200 predominantly Cross River youths on space technology, Governor Otu emphasized the shrinking job market that has left many highly educated Nigerians unemployed.

“There are numerous Master’s and PhD holders without jobs; some have resorted to driving taxis,” he remarked. “It is discouraging to see young people in their 30s and 40s still reliant on their families for support.”

The training, facilitated by Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT), equipped participants with advanced knowledge and skills in various facets of space technology.

Governor Otu encouraged youths to prioritize practical, future-oriented skills over mere certificates and degrees, which would empower them to compete on a global scale and contribute to Nigeria’s growth in innovative sectors.

“I am encouraged to see young people pursuing technical and innovative careers that can provide sustainable livelihoods and economic benefits,” he said. “Productivity is essential. It’s crucial to become self-reliant by mastering modern technology skills. While academic achievements are valuable, it is equally important to work hard toward skills that generate income quickly when degrees don’t guarantee jobs. This training is a step in the right direction, and the state urgently needs this expertise.”

He expressed gratitude for the comprehensive training and the opportunities it offers the youth for alternative economic prospects.

Jane Egerton-Idehen, CEO of NIGCOMSAT, highlighted that satellite technology holds the key to global connectivity and economic development.

She explained that the training aims to expand Nigeria’s pool of local talents in modern technology to support the country’s advancements in satellite technology.

“Empowering local youths is a federal government priority, which is why similar training sessions have taken place in South-South and other regions,” Egerton-Idehen stated.

The 200 participants received hands-on instruction in Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) installation and maintenance—a skill in high demand that can open doors to employment and entrepreneurship in the digital economy.

“These trainees are now equipped as job-ready technicians capable of deploying satellite internet to schools, hospitals, and remote communities,” she added.

As part of their empowerment, the graduates will enter the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme, where they will benefit from mentorship, funding, and market exposure to transform their ideas into viable ventures.

“We are investing in Nigeria’s future space technology capabilities by cultivating a strong local talent pool to meet growing demands,” she affirmed.

Egerton-Idehen also revealed that a major federal government space technology initiative is set to launch in the South-South region within the next two months.
