Reaction as Okpebholo to launch probe into Obaseki’s administration.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has reiterated his intention to launch a probe into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, who served as governor from 2016 to 2024.
Speaking during a victory parade held at the Government House in Benin City on Friday, Governor Okpebholo announced plans to establish a Commission of Inquiry to scrutinize the financial records and governance under Obaseki's tenure.
“I will open the books to examine the financial transactions and how Edo State was managed over the past eight years,” Okpebholo said. “For example, a university received N47 million, while a consultant was paid N51 million—this is unacceptable. They wanted to continue this pattern, but by God’s grace, we were able to stop them.”
Okpebholo emphasized that since assuming office, he has retained civil servants from the previous administration, including the Head of Service and several permanent secretaries, as a sign of continuity and professionalism.
He also hinted that former officials who served under Obaseki would be questioned regarding their roles and actions in the previous administration.
The governor further alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last election, Asue Ighodalo, had set aside funds for both election activities and legal battles.
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa expressed his satisfaction with the recent Supreme Court judgment that affirmed their victory, praising Okpebholo for leading the party through a successful legal defense and urging the administration to now focus on delivering for the people of Edo State.
Former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu also congratulated Okpebholo, describing his emergence as a victory for the people and calling on all stakeholders to unite for the development of the state.
