Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports claiming he approved the creation of new states.
He made the clarification on Tuesday during plenary, responding to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central). Akpabio explained that while the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals for the creation of new states, none has gone through the complete legislative process.
“I have seen more than 42 proposals, but not a single one has undergone full deliberation,” he stated.
“The process of creating a state is thorough and has not been completed in any case.”
He cautioned communities against holding meetings or mobilising support for proposed states that have not been legally approved, emphasizing that the Senate has not sanctioned the creation of any new state.
Akpabio urged Nigerians to rely solely on official communications from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments and similar matters.
Meanwhile, the Senate has scheduled a special session for Wednesday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and reflect on his contributions to Nigeria’s development following his recent demise.
