A woman has been arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly murdering her husband due to dissatisfaction with their sexual relationship, Indian authorities reported.
According to officials, on Sunday, July 20, at around 4:15 p.m., Nihal Vihar Police Station received a call from Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. A woman named Farzana Khan had brought her husband, Mohammad Shahid, to the hospital with multiple stab wounds. He was declared dead on arrival.
The couple, originally from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, initially claimed the husband had taken his own life. Farzana told police that Shahid had stabbed himself, allegedly overwhelmed by gambling-related debts. Her account was supported by Shahid’s brother, who accompanied them to the hospital.
However, a postmortem examination conducted on Monday, July 21, revealed that the nature of Shahid’s injuries was inconsistent with suicide. Medical examiners concluded the wounds were from a frontal attack and could not have been self-inflicted.
"A fatal stab wound made it clear this was not a suicide," said a senior police officer. Following these findings, police registered a murder case and launched a deeper investigation.
During questioning, officers examined Farzana’s mobile phone and discovered internet searches about deleting chat histories and using toxic substances such as aluminium phosphide (commonly known as salphos), known for its lethal properties.
Confronted with the evidence, Farzana reportedly confessed. She told investigators she was unhappy in the marriage due to both sexual dissatisfaction and financial stress caused by her husband's gambling. She also admitted to having an affair with Shahid’s cousin, who lives in Bareilly.
Farzana allegedly stabbed her husband three times in the chest before rushing him to the hospital and fabricating a suicide narrative to mislead authorities. The murder weapon—a knife—has since been recovered.
Police are now tracing her digital communications to identify who she had been chatting with and what may have influenced her actions. Farzana was taken into custody on Tuesday, July 22, and remains under investigation as police work to uncover the full motive behind the crime.
