Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging defending champions South Africa 2–1 in a tense semifinal clash.
The Falcons nearly took an early lead within the first 12 minutes, with chances falling to Chiwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. Ihezuo was played through by a brilliant pass from Ashleigh Plumptre in the 11th minute, but South Africa’s goalkeeper Andile Dlamini pulled off a fine save. A minute later, Dlamini also parried away a powerful effort from Okoronkwo.
Despite South Africa’s tidy passing in midfield, they struggled to trouble Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the first half.
Nigeria broke the deadlock just before halftime when a handball by Bomgeka Gamede inside the box resulted in a penalty. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted coolly, despite Dlamini getting a touch on the ball.
South Africa drew level in the 60th minute through Linda Motlhalo, who scored from the spot after they were awarded a penalty.
However, Nigeria sealed victory in dramatic fashion during stoppage time, with the right-back firing home a stunning long-range strike to send the Super Falcons into the final.
