A two-year-old boy has tragically died and several others have been injured after a vehicle crashed into a busy restaurant in Illinois, in what authorities have described as a "tragic accident."
Emergency services, including police and fire crews, responded swiftly to reports of a serious incident at Portillo’s, located at 2810 Route 34 in Oswego, shortly before 2:00 p.m. local time on July 30.
According to the Oswego Police Department, the vehicle ploughed through the restaurant’s front entrance, injuring at least 14 people. Eight victims, including the driver, were transported to local hospitals, while six others received treatment at the scene.
Tragically, the two-year-old boy, who was inside the restaurant at the time of the crash, succumbed to his injuries. Police confirmed that all those injured were also inside the building when the incident occurred.
During a news conference on July 31, Police Chief Jason Bastin said:
“We understand how difficult and emotional this incident is for everyone involved—the families, our community, our officers, and emergency responders. We are heartbroken to confirm that a 2-year-old boy has died as a result of this crash. On behalf of the Oswego Police and Fire Departments, we extend our deepest condolences to the family. We ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
Chief Bastin also stated that while the investigation remains ongoing, initial findings point to a tragic accident. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
A heavy emergency response presence remained at the scene for several hours, and support services are being provided to those affected.
The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but police say there is currently no indication of foul play. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
