Two Arrested for Throwing Man into Fire over Alleged Chicken Theft in Kenya

Two arrested for throwing suspected chicken into burning fire

Two men have been arrested in connection with a shocking mob justice incident in Nyamira County, Kenya, where a man accused of stealing a chicken was brutally assaulted and thrown into a burning fire.

The incident occurred on July 26, 2025, in Matongo, located in Nyamira North. The suspects, identified as James Nyang’au Kieri and Evans Nyang’au Anyoka, were caught on video viciously attacking the alleged thief before hurling him into the flames. The disturbing footage quickly went viral on social media, sparking nationwide outrage.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrests.

“Through forensic analysis, detectives tracked down the suspects and took them into custody. They are currently undergoing processing and will be arraigned in court,” the DCI said.

The National Police Service expressed deep concern over the growing number of mob justice cases, warning that such acts of vigilantism undermine the rule of law.

“We strongly urge members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. All individuals are entitled to due process. Anyone found engaging in mob injustice will face the full force of the law,” the police added.

The condition of the victim has not yet been publicly disclosed. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
