Dangote Refinery Receives First Batch of 4,000 CNG Trucks Ahead of Fuel Distribution Rollout

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has taken delivery of the first batch of its 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks, marking a major step toward the launch of its nationwide fuel distribution programme on August 15.

The trucks, imported through Apapa Port, form part of an estimated ₦720 billion investment aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s fuel distribution system by reducing logistics costs, easing transportation bottlenecks, and improving supply efficiency.

The initial batch arrived at the refinery’s Ibeju-Lekki site, where Dangote Industries’ Vice-President of Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, received them alongside refinery staff and customers.

“Given the complexities of global supply chains, the delivery of these specialised CNG-powered tankers is commendable. This will help maintain operational efficiency while expanding our fleet,”

said Group Chief of Branding and Communication, Anthony Chiejina, who described the project as “groundbreaking” for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.

According to Chiejina, the refinery expects at least 60 shiploads of trucks to arrive over the next six weeks, enabling a phased rollout of the new distribution model.

The programme is projected to save over ₦1.7 trillion annually in fuel distribution costs, with benefits expected to reach more than 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through reduced energy expenses and increased profitability.

Beyond cost savings, the initiative is designed to:

Revitalise dormant filling stations nationwide.

Create over 15,000 direct jobs, including drivers, station managers, and attendants at new CNG stations.

Reduce cross-border smuggling of petroleum products.

Promote environmental sustainability by lowering carbon emissions.

Dangote says the strategy aligns with its wider mission to eliminate logistics bottlenecks, enhance energy security, and stimulate economic growth, as the world’s largest single-train refinery continues to scale up operations.
