Ebonyi Govt Begins Gratuity Payments to Retirees Dating Back to 1996

The Ebonyi State Government has launched the process for paying gratuities to retired local government workers, covering retirees from 1996 to the present.

As part of the initiative, Governor Francis Nwifuru has inaugurated a six-member committee to oversee the verification and disbursement of payments to eligible retirees. The committee is chaired by Mrs. Catherine Ogbu, with members including Mrs. Mbam Joy, Dr. Cajethan Oketa, Hon. Justice Iheanachor Chima, and Comrade David Elom, representing the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). Mr. Martins Uguru will serve as Secretary.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Nwifuru urged the committee to carry out its duties with integrity and transparency.

“I have confidence in the calibre of individuals chosen for this task,” he said. “Every person who served this state at the local government level deserves to receive their full entitlements. We are undertaking this not because we have surplus funds, but because the welfare of our retirees is just as important as physical infrastructure.”

The Governor's remarks were contained in a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, and shared with journalists in Abakaliki.

Governor Nwifuru also instructed the committee to ensure immediate payment to retirees upon verification.

“Use the available documents as your guide, and ensure every verified retiree receives their payment alert on the same day,” he directed.

He also commended the local government chairmen for supporting and prioritizing the exercise.
