Edo Government Bans Nursery and Primary Graduation Parties, Introduces New Education Reforms

The Edo State Government has rolled out sweeping reforms in the education sector, including a ban on graduation parties for nursery and primary school pupils.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the new measures will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session and are designed to promote stability, consistency, and quality learning across schools in the state.

Key reforms include

Ban on Graduation Parties: Pre-basic and primary pupils will no longer hold graduation ceremonies. Only pupils completing Basic Education (Primary 1–JSS 3) and Senior Secondary 3 (SSS 3) will be permitted to celebrate modestly, with prom parties expressly prohibited.

Textbook Reuse Policy: Approved textbooks will remain in circulation for at least four years, enabling younger siblings to reuse books purchased by older ones.

Compulsory Entrepreneurship Training: All JSS 3 students must undergo mandatory entrepreneurship training before graduation. Beginning next session, every JSS 3 graduate will receive two certificates — the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade subject.

According to the Ministry, these reforms are part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure Edo students graduate with both strong academic grounding and practical entrepreneurial skills needed to compete in today’s world.
